The January meeting (more details under Club Meetings) is more than a regular meeting. It also involves food (most SAMOA get togethers seem to involve food!) and two auctions.
Here's the likely agenda for the day.
High Noon: Introductions, welcome and house rules.
12:00 until ??? Wander around outside. Look at Minis. Talk about Minis. Take photos of Minis. Enjoy the weather.
12:00 - 2:00: Silent Auction (More below.)
1:00 - 2:00: White Elephant Auction -- First part. (More below.)
2:00 - 3:00 (hopefully): SAMOA Club Meeting. Guests welcome. Nomination and election of 2008 officers.
3:00 until ???: White Elephant Auction -- Second Part.
???: At the end of the White Elephant Auction, the Big Spender Award is presented (as long as the last winner remembers to bring it back!).
Silent Auction:
Items donated by Mini vendors, club members and others are on display with a bidding sheet by each one. Bids are entered on the sheets with each bid having to be higher than the last. At the cutoff time, the last bid wins. It is not unusual for a last minute scramble to take place!
White Elephant Auction:
A "white elephant" is something of value...to someone, maybe not you, however. For instance, I imagine a real white elephant would be worth a lot of money, but I certainly have no use for one and would be happy to get rid of it!
For our purposes, white elephants are usually Mini related items that still have some value, just not to the current owner. "Superfluous to needs," so to speak. These are donated to the club and auctioned off as a way to raise money. Just to make it a bit more interesting, such items are wrapped (by the doner) so bidders are bidding blind!
