  • Always carry protection!

In the form of a spare rotor.

The Red Beast QUIT on me at a stoplight this morning. The person behind me had left enough room (A MIRACLE!) for a backwards coast to the curb. I had the comforting thump of the recently rebuilt fuel pump and a full fuel filter. I had a nice 3/8" spark from the coil. What I didn't have was any spark to the sparkplugs. After a short hike I liberated the cap and rotor from my Van and installed them, fired right up!
The test drive after my ordeal included a stop at Autosport. Sure enough the Lucas rotors have been problematic for them too. The voltage from the coil tower fails to make the turn via the rotor out to the plug towers. It just shoots straight to the nearest ground, the distributor shaft.
    Carry a spare! Don

Lucas rotors have been a known problem for some time. I've been using my old stock up instead of buying new ones.
The latest "Classic Motorsports" (May issue) has a brief article about the problem and mentions a company, Advanced Distributors, that has a solution. Haven't tried them, yet. Likely will, soon.

I hear that Advanced Distributors competition "Retarded Distributors" isn't doing too well.

I paypaled Advanced Distributors $35 plus $6 for shipping for a cap and two rotors on the 19th and they arrived today. Not bad turnaround. The cap is proudly labeled Made in China but appears to be of good quality. The contacts are beautiful brass and don't have the plastic flash climbing up them like the Lucas caps. The external towers are a bit rough with flash so I'll smooth them before installation. The rotors also look good. We'll see.
I asked about quantity discounts but got no response.

The rotors look like 23D/25D rotors only.
