I recently installed a carpet kit in my mini - and the fit around the shift boot and hand brake is not tidy. How have you fastened/trimmed out the carpet around the shifter boot and hand brake gaiter? is there a secondary trim piece or?

The main front and rear floor covering pieces from OE carpet sets were almost always molded to follow the floor pressings and that is why they actually fit and look right.
When replacing carpet, IMO, the extra cost of using molded over non-molded 'budget' type carpet is well worth the time and hassle of trying to correct the cheaper stuff.

I didn't purchase the formed carpet set so the center tunnel is quite as nice as what you show. I purchased a brake handle gaiter to clean it up a bit. I'll probably make a center console with a couple cupholders at some point too. I need to put the flare holder back in, hence the small red square of floor showing_______________________________________________
Some times it's not worth chewing through the restraints.
