Wheel Cylinder circlip

Maybe a time for a vote. One source on line says the ends of the retaining clip should be against the backplate. Another source says the curved portion should be against the plate. Haynes and the Rover Repair Manual do not address it. Maybe it doesn't matter. Thoughts?

Late to the party but I think it doesn't matter. Just getting it on is hard enough.
