  • Gearbox Case Repairs

The fins/teeth on the leading edge of the gearbox casing have been grounnd off...perhaps by a sped bump or...? I hear that these can be replaced with fins taken from another box. Fact or fiction? Does anyone local do such repair work?
Alternatively, I will require a 333 Cooper S "Q" casing. Or, I could use a sump guard and no one would seee the missing teeth!
While I'm at it, I read on another forum that on the Cooper S models the engine number was stamped on the gearbox as well. The numbers on mine do not match. Can anyone clarify this quandry?

Replace the fins? Sounds like a lot of work to me!

Engine number was not stamped on the gearbox for any Minis that I know of.
The more I know about Minis, the more I know I don't know about Minis.

      Thanks Chuck,
      Yes a bit if work...
I'm glad to hear your thoughts on the engine/gearbox numbers. What I read on the Mini Cooper forum didn't make much sense to me.

Is the box still in the car? or out on the bench?

Tom, Tom, Tom.... now everyone will know to look at your fins! Mine too for that matter. Fine!

I can almost, but not quite, imagine laying a bead of weld for the missing fin, grinding it close to size and then distressing it, beat it with a chain?, to look like the rest of the casting.

          Where are you heading James?

James: the box is out of the car.
Don: I wouldn't be too concerned about showing my fins...but they are all smashed!

                        Yeah,

I'm giving our own James T a hard time because he's gone all highfalutin on us by dropping names like Pebble Beach.

The reality is that I'm extremly jealous of his job at Motorsports Plaza. He's going to Pebble Beach, working on Ferraris, and I'm not.

That job could not have gone to a better person.

Thanks Don ..but I'm actually going to steer clear of the "highfalutin" if I can. I'll be at Laguna Seca for the pre-historic's, and historic's......Yes ..ha ha ha...the car I will be maintaining is a dinosaur

Sort of appropriate. From the dinosaur ERA.
