Short of an all out race engine, I can't think of a good reason to go without vacuum advance.
The more I know about Minis, the more I know I don't know about Minis.

The pre-A+ 998s, as fitted to the Elf and Hornet, ran a single HS2 (1.25") SU, and like 848cc, pre-A+, the vacuum advance connection was horizontal off of the body of the SU. It was located between where the dash pot fit and the output end of the carb body.
Long before the A+ engines came out, the 998s went to a single HS4 (1.5") SU. The connection was roughly in the same place but pointed upwards.
The more I know about Minis, the more I know I don't know about Minis.

          Hey Spacedude,

Are you related to Spaceman Spiff?

You really want to go with vacumn advance and an HS4 carb (and a Maniflow exhaust header). James T has some carbs for sale on this site right now.
