  • Why Two Mufflers?

I just noticed that my '79 Mini 1000 has two mufflers on a single exhaust pipe. It looks like a stock installation so why two mufflers?

The larger one is the actual muffler while the other one under the middle of the car is a resonator. It's designed to even out the sound of your exhaust by removing the highest and lowest tones. On many newer cars, you'll often only see one muffler as the catalyst ends up doing the 'mellowing'.
